With first pick the Carolina Panthers select?
Welcome the 2011 NFL draft preview PTU style, Am I here to break down Cam Newton's 40 time? Will I dissect his throwing motion and let you know which NFL system, he will thrive in? NO, NO , and NO. We are here to break down the worst draft picks by NFL teams in the last 5 years. Why the last 5 years? Because in the last 5 years there should be no excuse for a bust, with all the media attention on college athletics, as a athlete you can't even have sex without someone knowing it. So character issues are not a excuse any more when it comes to busts in the NFL. So the biggest bust the Carolina Panthers have had in the last 5 years is NOT having a first round pick in 2010 and 2009. So in 2008 The Carolina Panthers finished 12-4 won the division and probably felt REALLY good about the future, and are like "hey we a player or two away from winning a title, so they make the following moves:
01/28/2009 Free agent signing T Geoff Schwartz
01/28/2009 Free agent signing DT Babatunde Oshinowo
01/14/2009 Free agent signing FB Nehemiah Broughton
01/13/2009 Free agent signing DR Lorenzo Williams
01/13/2009 Free agent signing T Jonathan Palmer
01/13/2009 Free agent signing WR Kevin McMahan

01/13/2009 Free agent signing S Joe Fields
01/13/2009 Free agent signing DE Casper Brinkley
01/13/2009 Free agent signing RB Decori Birmingham
05/27/2009 Free agent signing S Paul Chiara
05/21/2009 Free agent signing CB Reggie Sullivan
05/02/2009 Free agent signing RB Markus Manson
05/01/2009 Free agent signing WR Larry Beavers
05/01/2009 Free agent signing TE Kevin Brock
05/01/2009 Free agent signing T Patrick Brown
05/01/2009 Free agent signing T Gerald Cadogan
05/01/2009 Free agent signing QB Hunter Cantwell
05/01/2009 Free agent signing WR Jason Chery
05/01/2009 Free agent signing CB D.J. Clark
05/01/2009 Free agent signing G C.J. Davis
05/01/2009 Free agent signing DT Marlon Favorite
05/01/2009 Free agent signing G Justin Geisinger
05/01/2009 Free agent signing C Keith Gray
05/01/2009 Free agent signing DT Lonnie Harvey
05/01/2009 Free agent signing LB Anthony Heygood
05/01/2009 Free agent signing LB Mortty Ivy
05/01/2009 Free agent signing LB Mike Juergens
05/01/2009 Free agent signing DT Justin Kershaw
05/01/2009 Free agent signing RB Jamall Lee
05/01/2009 Free agent signing LB Brit Miller
05/01/2009 Free agent signing WR Marcus Monk
05/01/2009 Free agent signing S Anthony Scirrotto
05/01/2009 Free agent signing LS Nick Sundberg
05/01/2009 Free agent signing T Garry Williams
If you have heard of any of these players? Or seen them play your a better football fan then me. But wait who did they acquire in a trade?
10/20/2009 Acquired DT Tank Tyler in trade
09/01/2009 Acquired DT Louis Leonard in trade
Now I know DT's can be game changers but the game changer you were seeking is in another castle.
So obviously these moves are terrible and not going to get you the Super Bowl. So who did the Panthers miss out on in 2009 and 2010 by making moves in 2009 they could have gotten Hakeem Nicks who would went to school in North Carolina and would have been great fit and complement to Steve Smith. and in 2010 they missed out on Dez Bryant and Jahvid Best.
SO Carolina Panthers your biggest bust in the last 5 years is not having a draft pick in 2009 and 2010
Next Article Denver Broncos your on the bust clock.

Mad Scientist, that was a very interesting post. I wondered why the Panthers have been so bad recently. What do you think they can do to turn it around? Should they aim for Cam Newton?
ReplyDeleteGO GIANTS!!
Currently the NFL is all about Mobility and size at Quarterback and having one insane game changer on defense. Super Bowl XLV showcased two teams with those two exact traits. The Steelers have Ben Roethlisberger and Troy Polamalu. The Packers have Aaron Rodgers and Clay Matthews. So the First piece for the Panthers to start thier road to any type of respectability is draft Cam Newton and surround him in a system that will have him succeed.
ReplyDeleteBut what about running the ball? Doesn't Carolina have good runners on their team??
ReplyDeleteThe NFL is copy cat league and the days of having two star running backs is old news. The reason is whats worse then having a aging running back, is having two aging running backs.
ReplyDeleteMad Scientist, you sound like an NFL insider LOL
ReplyDeleteIf they sign Cam Newton and some new runners can they possibly beat the Green Bay Packers?
Carolina still has talent and age on their side when it comes to running backs, Stewart is 23 and Williams is 27. Carolina ranked 7th last year in letting their QB get hit and gave up the 3rd most sacks, having a mobile QB like Cam will help their offensive line issues short term, but in the long run they will have to improve their offensive line, and finally before they beat the Packers, they have to worry about the other 3 teams in their division which are improving at a better rate.
ReplyDeleteSo trade one of those backs for some O-Line help. Also, that sacks stat is misleading. Every QB they had out there held the ball for about 60 minutes before releasing it. It's a result of them being very youung and inexperienced at the QB spot, but I don't think the O-line should take all the blame.
ReplyDeleteForget about the Packers, worry about winning 6 games this season (if it happens).
Who are the other 3 teams in their division? I thought the Super Bowl was all the mattered.
ReplyDeleteMad Scientist, you are really turning me on with all this talk about the Carolina Panthers. I am all hot and bothered now ;)
ReplyDeleteKeep your hands off her MAD Scientist she is all mine
