PTU Movie Review: Bigger, Stronger, Faster
Caught this movie today on Showtime, really excellent look at all sides of the steroid debate. The writer and director (Chris Bell) has one brother who is a powerlifter and another who was a jobber for the WWF in the 1990's. All the brothers are (or were) on steroids, and shortly after the movie was filmed the wrestling brother died of an overdose while in rehab.
They make some interesting comparisons between steroids and things like Tiger Woods getting Lasik surgery, Airforce pilots being given amphetamines by the U.S. government, classical muscians taking beta blockers during an audition, and porn stars injecting liquid viagra in their shlongs. He confronts athletes like Carl Lewis, Ben Johnson, and Floyd Landis about their doping "allegations". He also hangs out with some serious power lifters that point out that the world has greater problems then adults taking steroids.
In one part he demonstrates how those before and after supplement pictures in magazines can be faked....the mock ad below from the movie was photographed in the same day. Overall a great and well balanced movie, I give it 3 out of 4 bagels on the Johnny Bagels scale.

I agree, 3 out of 4. I liked how it showed both sides, since we always hear the negative side of roids.
ReplyDeleteMovie has something for everyone...even if you just like powerlifting, they have the segment where the guy is lifting with blood dripping out of his nose. I also like when they pick up the day laborers to make their own supplements.
