The Next Great?

A great debate is under way on whether or not Cam Newton can become a quality NFL quarterback. Naysayers, who seem to be the majority, claim that Newton is a spoiled, ego-maniac, perp who will never amount to anything. Objectively, Cam is a freak athlete and, in theory, looks like the prototype for future NFL quarterbacks. He does have a police record, but so many other successful, professional athletes do nowadays. Anyway, does it really matter? In sports, as in many other aspects of life, being a cocky a@@hole doesn't necessarily mean that you will be a failure. Sometimes it helps.

Are we hating Cam because we feel inferior in the presence of his greatness (like we do with Lebron)? Why can't he become the next great QB? So many people have already written him off that I would love to see him get drafted #1, be dominant in the NFL, and lead his team to championships.

Expect big things from this man. Why? Because he has the impetus: simply to prove you wrong, hater!

  1. Wait a minute, you said you don't like me because I have perp tendencies! What gives?

  2. Cam Newton has been success everywhere he has played thus far. On the other hand, when Carmelo first got to the Knicks they lost 8 in a row and he was sucking in 4th quarters (not anymore though).

If Cam doesn't play well in the NFL and his team sucks, then he deserves hate. For now, he should be considered a success.

  3. Yes, because barely half a season with my new team is a proven sample size of what success is. I won a NCAA championship in my freshman year with Cuse and made it to the playoffs in every season as a pro. I haven't won a championship but neither has LeBum.

  4. I should really be practicing to get ready for the playoffs, but I just love this blog

  5. Based on what I've seen in terms of his poor decision making, accuracy and arm I'm leaning towards bust. Plus he is going to play for a shit team like the Panthers (most likely).

  6. Nothing is proven about Cam yet. He is getting a ton of hate and hasn't played in one NFL game yet.

Hate should be distributed fairly. Carmelo deserved hate when he first got to Knicks.. I'm saying this not because I dislike him, but because it was only fair.

Besides, I never said Carmelo was a bad player.

  7. LeBum never beat a Melo team, even in their high school days.

I'm with Snoot. Bad decisions, inaccurate arm, a tendency to run first and taking a ton of hits all mean BUST.

  8. And the Perpmelo situation is a different story.

I was hoping to lead this discussion towards Cam Newton's future.

  9. I should say, LeBum never beat a Melo team in any imprtant game, including a highschool championship.

  10. To be fair, Carmelo's NBA teams have always been A LOT better than Lebron's (until this year).

I didn't mean for this to turn into another argument about Carmelo.

What about Cam? Why or why not will he be successful?

  11. But you don't like me because of my "perp" attitude, so you shouldn't like Cam either. He broke the rules.

  12. But he hasn't let his perpness affect his game (so far).

  13. Neither have I. I heard you said I fought with coaches, but I see no evidence of that. Also, I was a great team mate at the Olympics. I also hit 3 game winners for the Knicks so far.

  14. People aren't hating on him. They're hating on his overvalued/over hyped game. He doesn't have the basic tools to be a good pro QB...like throwing the ball accurately or having a big enough arm to make a big pass.

It's sort of like saying someone is hating on a top wide receiver prospect who has no hands.

  15. From an ESPN article (not my words):

As productive as Anthony has been since the Nuggets drafted him No. 3 overall in 2003, his behavior has often been a problem.

Nearly five years ago, he apologized to his teammates for refusing to play in the final minutes of a loss on the road against the Pistons.

The Nuggets suspended him for the first two games of this season, punishing him for getting arrested for drunken driving last spring while they were pushing for a playoff berth.

He was suspended for 15 games in the 2006-07 season for his involvement in the Nuggets' brawl with the New York Knicks when he landed a punch and ran away.

Earlier in his career, Anthony's name kept showing up in the headlines for all the wrong reasons: A bar fight in New York City; a bag of marijuana found in his backpack at the airport; showing up on a bootleg DVD in Baltimore in which a man threatened to kill drug snitches.

  16. Is Cam better than the other QB's that are coming out in this coming draft?

  17. Hey, I thought this post was supposed to be about me not Carmelo.

  18. Cam's girlfriend:

According to the site, "shortie is a cutie with a booty". See for yourself.

  19. Not bad, but I hope all of our readers don't go to Bossip from now on.

  20. I don't see it. Blaine Gabbret from Mizzo and Ryan Mallett from Arkansas are both better QB's. They understand the pocket better, read defenses better, and make better decisions.

Mallet has a huge arm and is very accurate. Gabbert struggles with accuracy but is still better than Newton. Both also have those intangible "we aint losing today" attitudes, although Mallett seems to have a streak of Phillip Rivers in him (not sure if that's a good thing or not yet).

The NFL is trending towards big and super athletic QB's. That said lets look at the tangibles

    -Gabbert is 6'4", 243 lbs, 10 inch hands, and ran a 4.61/40.

    -Cam is 6'5", 244 lbs, 9 7/8 inch hands, and ran a 4.58/40

-Mallet is 6'7", 247 lbs, 10 3/4 inch hands, and ran a 5.05/40 (slow big guy)

-Christian Ponder also seems like he's getting a lot of buzz but I haven't seen enough of him to really say anything about his game.

  21. You make it sound like those guys are just as athletic as Cam, which isn't the case. Did you see some of his highlights? Crazy stuff.

I realize there are other guys who were athletic and had great college highlights but were never good in the NFL though.

What if Cam can play in a system that allows him to use his athleticism and doesn't rely on him to win the game with big passes? Like a team with a good running game and solid D.

  22. Look at Cam and Gabbert's 40 times...not that different. I get that it's "straight speed" and doesn't indicate how fast the guy cuts and changes directions but Gabbert is good.

And putting Cam in the Wildcat just means you put Cam in the hospital. The QB touches the ball almost every offensive play. If all he's going to do is hand off or dump off or run...he's going to get hit a lot. QB's, unlike running backs, aren't used to getting popped and usually get hurt. Just ask Mike Vick about trying to play a full season running it half of time and holding the ball forever.
