KNICKS GOT PLAYED

When are the Knicks going to realize that anytime Isaiah gets involved something will go wrong?

The Nuggets essentially got the most in return for a star player out of any trade in the history of basketball. All this when he was going to leave anyway (his house was even up for sale) and so they were in a position with very little leverage.

What happened? The Knicks got nervous. Rumors about the Nets trading 14 first-round picks for Carmelo (when he clearly stated that he wouldn't sign there).... rumors about the Lakers trading Bynum for Melo (although the Lakers didn't have the trade pieces and couldn't afford Carmelo unless they forced Kobe into early retirement)....

I'm glad we got Carmelo, the move had to be made. Still, we gave up too much when we could have given up a whole lot less.

In the end, the Knicks gave up: Curry's contract (a HUGE asset), Gallo (really good young player), Chandler (good all-around young player), Felton (in a swap for their 52 year old PG), Mosgoz (who is untested but still a young 7 foot player), a first-round pick AND Randolph (weren't they supposed to trade him for that pick?), and cash on top of it all. Also, they took on 3 extra scrubs.

A couple of weeks ago the Knicks were offering Curry's contract, Chandler, Randolph, and possibly one other piece. Through deft negotiations, they added Gallo, Mosgov, a first-round pick, and 3 million dollars. Then they traded their young PG for a senior citizen (who is averaging less points + assists and is 8 years older than Felton) and took on other useless players. Great negotiating.

Lupica said if the deadline was extended they would have included Walt Frazier. He's right.

  1. BREAKING NEWS: Madison Square Garden, Spike Lee, and the Knick's franchising rights were also included in the Carmelo deal.

  2. An underlining story may be the dynamics within the Knicks organization. All of a sudden Isaiah got involved and Dolan wasn't the key facilitator anymore. Then the trade demands seemed to change dramatically and the Knicks ended up included a lot of pieces that weren't even in the conversation a few week ago.

  3. Zeke turns everything to trash. There was no way his input could mess this up though. The extra pieces we got rid of were guys that were going, or guys we would eventually let go to aquire Melo.

I am petrified of what happens in the offseason when he finished his 9 win season at Florida Atlantic and needs a new job.

  4. I agree 100 percent with Bottle. THe Knicks gave up way too much for Carmelo when they didn't have to. That's why there are fans that aren't crazy about this deal, because they didn't have to give Denver that much. Anyone that actually believes that Carmelo would have went to NJ is on crack. Prior to this weekend, NJ/Denver had 3 deals in place within the last 6 months, What happened? They all fell completely apart. Why??? Because Carmelo was never seriously considering the Nyets. Prok only re-entered the negotiations to make sure NY payed a premium. Guess what, his bluff worked. No knowledgeable fan is arguing that Gallo, Felton, Chandler and Moz were going to be superstars. That's not the point. Fans are upset because we could have kept at least two of those as future assets and still acquire Melo in the process.

And enough with this whole "the Knicks now have room to sign a third superstar" stuff I've been hearing from all these fans drinking the kool aid today. So far from the truth it isn't funny. All signs point to the new CBA lowering the overall salary cap. So even with all the shedding of contracts(Billups, Balkman, Brewer, etc) they still won't have enough room for another max deal. Amar'e and Melo will be taking up most of the space, so how exactly are they going to fit Paul or Williams? The only way I see it happening is if Amar'e and Melo restructure their deals along with Deron or Paul taking a pay cut. We'll see just how bad these guys want to win then. Which brings me to my next point, those extra assets that the Knicks could have kept if Dolan/Walsh played their cards right could have been used as trade bait next season when we get "The Decision part 3, 4 and 5 with Howard, Deron and Paul." Now we essentially have nothing to trade for them except Fields. We went all in on Melo without thinking about the potential ramifications of how this could effect the future of forming a big three. As of right now Melo and STAT are not going to be good enough to beat the Heatles the next 3-5 years. Not without that third superstar, which we potentially screwed up from happening. That's why there are fans that aren't going crazy about this deal.
