Hurricane Irene: The Aftermath!

Hurricane Irene came and went and the amount of damage caused is generally less severe than originally predicted. This, we should be grateful for. I have seen many people expressing their dismay over over the severity of the hurricane and the perceived overreaction by the local governments. The Bloomberg administration acted properly in exercising caution in the wake of an unprecedented storm. The two most criticized moves was the forced evacuation of residents of low lying areas and the shutdown of the transit system. The results of the hurricane proved their actions right. Many places were flooded although not specifically the ones that Bloomberg ordered evacuated. They took the areas most at risk of flooding and made a decision from there. Certain sections of the subway are also flooded. If the trains were running, at the very least you would have had a situation similar to the past snowstorm where commuters were stuck in a train for over 8 hours. The government's job is to protect the public, not worry about your weekend plans. People need to stop being so selfish and realize although you personally might not have been affected, many people were. Like the poor owner of the car underneath that humongous tree.

  1. Pictures were taken from around my neighborhood. I'm sure many similar situations are all around NYC.

  3. I've seen some mocking reactions from people calling the storm bullshit and overrated because their area didn't get hit hard. Those people should be thankful. Tons of areas were flooded, homes destroyed, millions without power for a couple of days, and estimated damages in the billions. Sometimes the government can't win. If they hadn't prepared they would have gotten hammered for not being so. Being over-prepared, they get criticized for scaring everyone. Just be glad the situation wasn't handled like Bush circa 05.

  4. Yeah it was definitely very local, our area in Long Island had tons of trees down but if you go a little bit north not as bad. Mr. D returns with a strong post!

  5. Mr. D, you are wrong. Bloomturd over reacted, I made it to the gym, work, and yellow hook during the storm. A few downed trees is no excuse to hide inside and not act like a man.

  6. I don't blame the Mayor. He had to do it after the blizzard mess and it's better to be cautious, but the media was ridiculous. C'mon, 72 straight hours of coverage on every channel for a storm that lasted maybe 5 hours in New York? There's only so many times they can say "Irene's on her way" and then go to some asshole standing in a slicker in the rain.

  7. I love when they put them on the beach in the storm and ask them how it is out there for hours on end.
