M@d's 5 Observations About The First 5 Weeks

1. The NFL is a passing league as evidenced by the fact that there are currently 4 QB's who are on pace to break Dan Marino's single season record of 5084 yards. Three of those QB's are pictured above and if you care to know about the 4th just click this link.

2.Rushing attempts are way down, the current leaders in attempts is Adrian Peterson, he is on pace to average 22 carries a game and finish with 352 attempts, that will good for 54th all time in a season, he won't even break his personal attempts record of 363.

3. The two above current patterns in the NFL can not and should not continue. As the season progresses all teams will be hindered by the weather and other elements, and coaches should come to realize that they can't win shootouts with certain teams and will turn to their running games to protect leads and keep other teams off the field.

4. There are some crazy surprise teams out there but I'll start with Buffalo. When the season started they didn't make any flashy additions , but they actually found a way to get better with some subtractions, trading Lee Evans who for a long time had been an explosive player, but was always plagued by inconsistency. The toughest move for the Bills, though, was just outright cutting Aaron Maybin.Why was this such a tough move? The organization basically admitted that they made a mistake by drafting him with the 11th pick of the first round in 2009 (not every organization can and will do that) and it's that type of self reflection that has the Bills winning more games against opponents they normally would have lost to last season. The second biggest surprise for me is the Lions, every NFL analyst could have told you that they would be better but if any of them told you they would be 5-0, you would think they would have lost their mind. Their start is impressive but I'm looking forward to the rest of their season as they don't have a single cupcake finishing up their schedule. The 3rd and final surprise for me is the San Francisco 49ers. Not that they are tops in their division(Its the weakest division in my opinion), but the play of QB Alex Smith,who has been written off so many times and this season looks like he finally has figured it out. Smith is currently 3rd in QB passing rating.

5. The NFL seems to be the most fun it has been in years, with so many comebacks and talented players. I feel like for the first time in a long time the game is the focus, and not the mouth's of players with huge egos like Chad Ochocinco, Randy Moss, or Terrell Owens.

I feel this is going to be one of the best seasons in NFL history, and I hope you all enjoy the show.

Floyd Mayweather Jr: Still a Dick

The entire nation is buzzing about the wacky fight on Saturday. Unfortunately, none of us saw it. I was playing ping pong in Carroll Gardens with Bottle, Hater J was sleeping and everyone else was either at a bachelor party or just didn't care. Whoops. Anyway, we still have some opinions on Money Mayweather.

Floyd's the boxer everyone loves to hate. He's best buds with 50 cent, and he's definitely picked up a thing or two from Curtis about being a very obnoxious, very rich asshole. Even before Saturday's sucker punches and old man threatening, Floyd was not the most likable person. He may sport an undefeated resume and title belts galore but is he the best pound for pound fighter alive? Of course, there's one fight that every one (and I mean everyone) wants to see and would probably be the most watched pay per view event of all time. And since a young Tyson vs. young Ali is probably not going to happen any time soon, we'll settle for Mayweather Pacquiao. Will this ever happen?

He'll fight Pacquio. Mayweather will fight when the Pac Man finishes a big fight, is slower, older, and declining from his current prime condition. Floyd will also have a one year self imposed layoff ensuring he's fresh for the fight. When the fight happens, he will jab for 12 rounds, get into another fight with Larry Merchant, mentioning "no one respects him although he proved he's the best, yet again".

His whole career has been like that.

Look at the notable wins:
Juan Manuel Marquez fought his entire career below 135 and fought Mayweather at 144. Mayweather showed up at 147 and Marquez much lighter and smaller.
Oscar DeLaHoya - Won a split decision against a guy who was 35 and beat Felix Sturm to get a belt (and liked to wear women's clothes).
Shane Mosley - Ducked him for about 4-5 years before taking the fight. I think Mosley was 40 years old.
Ricky Hatton - Bum (and Limey).
Carlos Baldomir - waited forever to fight him.
Zab Judah - Waited until Zab lost the belt to fight him.
Arturo Gatti - Called him a "paper champ" then after beating him a year or so later cried after win saying it proved what a great champion he was.


So there you have it. Floyd is a fairly technically skilled fighter with a smoking hot fiance, but has inflated his own flawless career through evasive duck and dodge moves that would be the envy of any boxer. Floyd, to quote yourself, "you ain't shit".

Dumb and Politically Incorrect Don't Mix

By now I'm sure you've seen this video of a ditzy blonde girl with a valley girl accent making fun of Asians in her school library. While all of us may say stupid things most of the time in our private lives, common sense dictates you don't post a video making fun of Asians shortly after an earthquake wiped out Japan. Now she is surprised she is getting death threats and needs police protection on campus....welcome to the modern age of the internet. I'm not sure what she thought was going to happen, but she learned the hard way that great cleavage only gets you so much sympathy. 

Now that we've established that she has no brains, let's turn to the NY Daily News comments section to see what the best and brightest have to say on the topic. 

"You people, yes you people, make me sick. You're nothing but a bunch of nasty hypocrites. People need to go f.ck themselves and leave her alone. Everybody is a racist in their homes, we all say nasty stuff in our homes regarding other races whether they're asians, blacks, whites, hispanics , jews, muslims....because she did the same but only with a video, now everyone wants to attack her? You people make me sick. The only thing she is guilty of is being stupid."

Public Workers In The Crosshairs

Some of my fellow bloggers have commented that we haven't lived up to the "politics" portion of our tagline, so time to make good on our 1 month anniversary.

It is not surprising that in hard economic times everyone likes to point the finger at the "other guy" as the problem. Last year people were driving by the homes of AIG executives and threatening them, this year everyone wants to fire all their kids teachers. While it is obvious that we need to make some changes, instead of constructive conversations everyone seems to pick the villain of the day and crucify them. Right now, public employees across the board are clearly the target. Do they really deserve all the scorn?

I'll be the first to admit that many people I know with government jobs have a pretty good gig. Not getting laid off unless you stab someone in the face, pensions, and overtime are great perks. Especially compared to what some of us in the private sector have to deal with. Despite that, I'm going to make the argument that for the following two reasons this isn't where we should be focusing our anger:

1) Everything they have was negotiated as part of a contract. It is one thing to change things for those going forward, but if existing employees "out negotiated" the other party it is not fair to go back and say "Ooops, that was a bad deal for us, let's change it up."

2) Call me a Socialist, but public workers aren't the group of the population dominating a high % of the wealth in this country. It is not fair to let the CEO's on Wall Street responsible for the economic collapse get off with tax payer supported golden parachutes and then go crazy over 3% raises for garbage men.

Who should take the Last Shot?

There seems to be some sort of debate as to who should take the last shot for the Miami Heat in a close game. Well here are some solutions.

1. Who ever the coach designs the play for (I know Scottie Pippen you don't like this one)
2. Highest paid player (I mean thats what you pay him for to win games)
3. The specialist (Robert Horry made mad cream with his "clutch ability")
4. The guy with the hot hand (He made 2 in a row, the 3rd one is a lock)
OR
You can just do what the best Basketball Player of all time did and just give it to the teammate who was open and had a shot in his range. Jordan to Kerr = Championship, Jordan to Horace Grant to John Paxson= Championship, or Just Jordan (Thanks Craig Ehlo and Bryon Russell)

So Wade and Lebron keep fighting as the Celtics sweep you out of the playoffs, or you can just make those players around you better.
